A client enters the office of Conner and Andy Private Investigations or CAPI.

“I’m Corey and I need your help.”

“What’s the case?” Conner asks.

“What my associate, Conner meant to say is what’s wrong. How can we help?”

“I think my wife might be a murderer,” Corey says.

“Go on,” Conner says as he leans forward in his chair.

“I was in bed a few nights ago and was awoken by my wife, who came into bed. She reeked of sweat and blood,” Correy explains.

“Did she murder someone?” Conner asks.

“Why didn’t she take a shower first?” Andy asks.

“I don’t know,” Corey replies.

“You don’t know if she murdered, but she comes home late every night. We’ll take the case!” Conner shouts.

Andy walks over to Conner’s desk and whispers to him, “Are we really going to take this case? We don’t even know if she killed someone.”

“Oh, she did. We just have to find out who,” Conner whispers back.

“Fine, I never doubted you before,” Andy says, “We’ll take the case, what was your name again?”

“Corey and you should probably talk to my wife first.”

“We will, when is she available to talk with us?” Conner asks.

“I don’t know, she works almost every night and has tennis lessons on the weekends,” Corey says.

“Just call us when she’s available,” Conner says.

Conner wakes up from his slumber the next morning and looks at his phone. He has a missed

call and a voicemail from Corey. He listens to the voicemail: “Is this Conner of Conner and Andy Private Investigations? My wife has been missing since last night. I’ve tried to call her office, but they don’t answer.”

Conner calls Corey at the office with the office phone, “So, your wife is missing. When did you last see her?”

“Yesterday morning before she went to work,” Corey says with worry.

“We’ll check her office, what’s the address?” Conner asks.

“321 Chesnut Street, Loverton,” Corey read off the fridge.

“Okay,” Conner says as he writes down the address.

Conner and Andy walk up to the grey office building and go inside. They look a the directory, but it’s empty and has dust inside it as if the inserts were removed years ago. They walk upstairs to find a few unlocked doors, one empty office after another.

“I think this goes deeper than we thought,” Conner says to Andy.

“What should we do next?” Andy asks.

“We should ask Corey what he knows about his wife’s job,” Conner suggests.

Conner calls Corey.

“Did you find my wife?” Corey asks.

“No, what does your wife do for a living?” Conner asks.

“She’s an accountant, why?” Corey asks.

“Well, we went to her office building and it was completely empty. Have you ever visited her at work?” Conner asks.

“No, I never have — -what? Where is she!?” Corey shouts.

“We don’t know, but we suspect she might be a hired assassin or something,” Correy assumes.

“Well, she does stay at her sister’s a lot, she lives in Eastown,” Correy remembers.

“That’s a few towns over,” Andy whispers to Conner.

“We’ll check her sister’s house, what’s the address?” Conner asks Corey.

“431 Blake Street, Easton,” Corey tells him.

“Thanks,” Conner says before he hangs up.

In the car ride over, Andy turns down the music. “Are you ready for this?”

“I’m ready for anything,” Conner says with confidence.

“She could kill us.”

“We’ve been through worse.”

“I know, but this could get ugly fast.”

“We’ll get through this and if we don’t, I’ll be by your side.”

They hold hands and mentally prepare for this case.

Conner parks the car in front of an abandoned warehouse. Andy pushes open the door and a woman, presumably Corey’s wife and two men point their guns at them.

“We’re unarmed, we just want to talk,” Conner says civilly.

“Talk about what?” Corey’s wife, Phoebe asks.

“Your husband, Correy is worried about you. He thinks you’re at your sister’s house,” Conner explains.

“And let’s keep it that way,” Phoebe says.

“But — ” Conner tries to say, but Phoebe points the gun at him.

Andy hides Conner, but then works up the courage to step around him.

“Hey, we were just hired to find out what his wife is doing every night,” Andy boldly says.

“And I’m hired to kill people,” Phoebe responds.

“Really, why?” Andy asks before he cowardly runs back behind Conner.

“I not going to tell you two, just tell my husband, I’m going on the road and I’m never coming back,” Phoebe says.

“Why can’t you tell him?” Conner says.

“Because I’m in a tight spot and need not be found,” Phoebe states.

“Okay, we’ll tell him,” Conner says sternly.

Conner and Andy walk away and back to the car.

“That’s it, the case is over,” Andy says as he opens the car door and hops in.

“Yes, we got the answer we wanted.”

“But what about Corey, he’ll just continue living his life knowing his wife is gone?”

“Yes, the case is closed, now we just have to tell Corey. You can’t help everyone. You can try, but not everyone wants to be helped.”

“That’s so bittersweet, I can taste it.”

They drove over to Corey’s house and broke the news to him.

“Corey, it’s Conner from Conner and Andy Private Investigations, let us in.”

“No, you’re here to give me bad news, I can feel it.”

“You have to accept that your wife is gone.”

Corey opens the door, “She’s dead?”

“No, she’s on the road and never coming back.”

“I’m sorry, but you’ll find someone else,” Andy says.

“No, I won’t. We met in high school and have been together ever since,” Corey says.

“Oh, but some people drift apart and others stay together.”

“I know, we weren’t the best couple, but we had our good moments and bad moments. I wish she would have been more upfront and would have told me sooner.”

“She might be on the run, but she will always remember you.”

“You think so?”

“I know so.”

“Thanks for your help guys, maybe we’ll work together again.”

“You’re welcome.”
