Childhood Memories Part IV
Luke set a box on the floor of the guest bedroom and he sat on the bed. He picked up a framed photo of his parents on their trip to Hawaii. His father wore a Hawaiian shirt and his mother wore a red dress with flower prints. A tear dropped from his eye and onto the glass of the frame.
Brenda walked into the room. “What are doing sitting down? There are more boxes to bring up!”
“Sorry, I was just remembering that last time I saw them.”
“I remember, it was a great day, wasn’t it? Oh-I mean, it was a terrible day.”
“It was…”
Luke and Brenda decided to have their wedding on a cruise ship.
The captain steered them into open waters when it started to rain. He tried to steer around the big waves, but the waves only got bigger. A gigantic wave washed over the ship and pushed it underwater. The cruise ship resurfaced.
“What just happened?” Luke asked the master of ceremonies.
“I think the ship just–yup-I just got a message from the captain we’re retaining water and the ship is sinking.”
Everyone at the wedding began to panic as water filled the room. The attendees rushed to the lifeboats. The captain stayed with the ship as it sank deeper and deeper into the sea.
Brenda, Luke, and all of the guests made it to the lifeboats. The journey was long as they waited for a rescue ship. They grew hungry and thirsty.
Days and weeks went by before they were discovered by a rescue ship. Luke’s parents had died from the heat, hunger, and thirst. They were in their sixties.
Once they were rescued, the dead bodies were brought up too.
They were later laid to rest on land.
“We got married, but at what cost? My parents’ lives?” Luke said as he set the framed picture back on the nightstand.
“I know you miss them and I miss them too,” Brenda replied.
Luke looked down in distress.
“You take a break and I’ll keep helping the movers,” Brenda said as she walked out of the room.
