Chapter 8: The Fourth of July: Will
Will’s father invited his nearby family for a barbecue to eat, talk, and watch the fireworks, which would be visible from the backyard.
Everyone arrived and were told by Will to “Follow the path to the backyard barbecue.”
Joel drove up the driveway with his parents.
“Now park it,” Joel’s father said.
“I know how to drive, dad. I have my license,” Joel said as he stepped out of the car.
“I know.”
“Hey, Joel. How are you?” Will asked.
“I’m good.”
“How are you and Arya?”
“Good, good.”
“Alright, the barbecue is in the backyard.”
Will greeted everyone and told them where to go until his father said the food was ready. Then he rushed to the backyard and grabbed a paper plate.
“What do you want? We’ve got hotdogs, hamburgers, grilled carrots, and steak,” Will’s father told him.
“I’ll take a hamburger and a hotdog,” Will replied.
His father used the spatula, then a two-pronged grill fork to set the meat on Will’s plate.
Joel sat down next to Will with his full and healthy plate.
“Looks good,” Will said with sarcasm.
“I know — hey, just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s not tasty,” Joel replied. He spit out his food into a napkin.
“Hypocrite.”
“I want meat.”
“Then go get a hotdog, Arya isn’t here to judge you.”
“No, I haven’t eaten meat in over a month and I don’t want to break my streak.”
“Don’t you mean steak?”
“No.”
The sun began to set, a few guests went back to their cars and grabbed blankets to sit on.
“I love the blue fireworks!” Joel shouted as the fireworks started.
“Me too, but I like the red ones more!” Will shouted back.
Will took out his phone and recorded the fireworks to watch again later.
Later, the fireworks finished with the finale, an explosion of many fireworks at once.
Once the show was over, everyone threw out their trash and went home.
