Sacred Heart

The town of Sacred Heart is like any other town, small and nothing happens there. Except, one day, at Sacred Heart High School. Matthew sat alone at lunch like he does every school day. Then, Addison, a blonde girl, who wore the latest trends, walked over from the popular table and asked Matthew, “Do you wanna go out with me?” The entire cafeteria sat in shock and awe because a popular kid asked out a shy kid and a girl asking out a boy is so out of the norm. “Yes, you’re pretty and I have nothing planned tomorrow. Does that work for you?” Matthew asked. The kids nearby hung onto every word of the soon to be couple and the kids in the back of the room were relayed the information. “Yeah, pick me up at eight,” Addison said. She went back to her table and finished her lunch.

“Why did you ask out that shy guy loser? Asked Addison’s friend, Miranda.

“Did you see and hear everyone’s reactions? If we date, I’ll become even more popular. You see the more people who find about us, the more popular I’ll get,” Addison explained.

“But won’t Matthew become popular too? He’ll be dating a pretty, popular girl like you,” Miranda said, pointing out a flaw in her plan.

“Yes, but that’s a minor detail,” Addison added.

The next day, Addison waited by her front entrance for her date. Matthew knocked on the door and rang the doorbell. Addison answered the door. She grabbed his sweaty hand, pulled, and walked him to his car.

“Let’s get this over with,” she whispered to herself.

“What was that?” Matthew asked. “Nothing,” she replied.

Matthew opened the passenger’s door for his date and walked around the car and got in the driver’s side. He started the car and turned on the radio and she quickly switched it off.

“Here are a few rules, no touching and kissing. And I wanna be complicated every five minutes,” Addison stated.

“Okay,” Matthew said.

“So, where are you takin’ me?” Addison asked.

“Somewhere special,” Matthew replied.

They pulled into the fanciest restaurant in town and Addison was shocked since she thought he was poor. She was actually excited. They entered the restaurant and Matthew had the restaurant reserve them a table. Wow, so classy and prepared. Maybe this won’t be bad, Addison thought. They ordered their drink, then their meals. There was light conversation. The night ended with a peck on Addison’s cheek and a goodbye as he dropped her off at her house.

They dated for a few weeks. Every time he saw Addison in the halls she was laughing with her friends. Everyone started asking him questions. “What is she like?” “Have you met her parents?” He tried to answer them the best he could, but he didn’t like the attention.

Addison and her friend Miranda sat in the back of one of Matthew’s classes.

He heard them talking: “So, how’s it goin’ with Matthew?”

“Good, actually. He treats me well and buys me gifts,” Addison said.

“Oh, so how’s the plan goin’?” Miranda said, trying to whisper.

“Shhh, I don’t want the whole school to find out,” Addison said.

“We’ll talk about it later,” Addison also said. The bell rang and every left for their next class.

At lunch, Matthew confronted her directly, he sat next to her and her friends. “Addison, we need to talk,” Matthew said.

“I’m kinda busy, hun. Can we talk later?” Addison asked.

“No, this is important. What plan did you have to date me?” Matthew asked.

The whole cafeteria (the audience) waited for the response. “What plan?” Addison said in shock and embarrassment.

“I don’t know what plan, but I do know there is something up,” Matthew admitted. Addison looked around and darted her eyes from left to right. “Alright, I can’t take the pressure anymore. I made up a plan to become more popular by dating you,” Addison confessed.

“Well, I don’t think we can be together anymore now knowing our relationship is built on lies,” Matthew said, then walked away.

“Well, I developed feelings for you,” Addison blurted out.

“Oh, well I still can’t be with a liar. Goodbye, Addison, I’ll see you in Math class,” Matthew said.

“Wait!” Addison yelled. She tried to catch up to him, but he was too fast. She instead went into the bathroom and cried, mascara running down her cheeks. She knew she’d never love someone like him again. Or would she?
