Singing in the Snow
The morning of Christmas Day, Chase and Amy rushed downstairs to open their gifts.
Their parents walked out of the kitchen and sat on the couch.
“Wow, there are so many presents. I want to open the big purple one first!” Amy shouted in excitement.
“We’ll save that one for later,” her mother replied. She handed her a little box with blue wrapping paper.
Amy unwrapped it as dad gave Chase an envelope. Inside the little box was a nightlight. The envelope had a gift card to the video game store in town.
“I know you wanted one and keep having nightmares, so here you go,” her mother said.
“Thanks — -” Amy said as she hid it behind her back so her brother couldn’t see it.
“What? You don’t like it?”
“No, I — ”
“I can return it if you don’t like it.”
“No, no, no!”
“Alright.”
Amy and Chase opened more gifts, toys and gift cards. Then they gave their parents the gifts they got them. Amy got her mother a cheap necklace with a heart on it that she got from Kohls. Chase got his dad a set of ties.
“It’s time to open the big one!” their mother shouted in excitement. “This one’s for both of you.”
Their father lifted it from behind the tree and set it in front of them. They quickly unwrapped it. The box had kitchen and workshop sets.
“Both of you can play with either set. It doesn’t matter.”
Their dad sliced the tape with scissors to open the box. He cut the plastic pieces and bands and put the parts together.
Chase looked outside. “It’s snowing!”
“Can we play outside?” Amy asked her parents.
“Yes, but you have to put all your winter gear on first,” their mother pushed.
The kids moaned in dissatisfaction.
“What do you want to freeze to death out there in your pajamas?”
“No,” Amy and Chasen said in unison.
They marched to the hall closet and their mother helped them put on their snowsuits, gloves, hats, and jackets. Then she sent them out to the backyard.
They waddled through about six inches of snow.
“Singing in the snow,” Amy sang as she walked around a skinny tree with her hand on the trunk.
The tree shook and snow fell on her. She continued to sing as she brushed the snow off her hood. “I’m singin’ in the snow, just singin’ in the snow. What a glorious feeling I’m happy again.”
“What are you singing?” Chase asked Amy.
“It’s from that movie we saw a few nights ago. I think it was Singing in the Rain, but I changed rain to snow.”
“Oh, you’re crazy. Wanna make snow angels?”
“Sure.”
They both fell back into the snow and swept their arms in a semi-circle.
Twenty years later, Amy is singing in a cafe for an open mic night. The cafe is empty as it just started to snow.
“I changed the lyrics to Singin’ in the Rain to make it more wintry,” Amy says into the microphone.
Her brother walks in and sits at a table in the back.
“I’m singing in the snow
Just singing in the snow
What a glorious feelin’
I’m happy again.
I’m laughing at clouds
So dark up above
The sun’s in my heart
And I’m ready for love
Let the stormy clouds chase
Everyone from this place
Come on with the snow
I have a smile on my face
I walk down the lane
With a happy refrain
Just singin’,
Singin’ in the snow
Dancin’ in the snow
I’m happy again!
I’m singin’ and dancin’ in the snow!
I’m dancin’ and singin’ in the rain!
Why am I smiling
And why do I sing?
Why does December
Seem sunny as spring?
This is why I get up
Each and every morning.
Happy with my head up
With joy in my heart
Why is each new task
A trifle to do?
Because I am living
A life full of you.
The snow’s falling
And I’m not bawling.
I’m overjoyed
To be singing in the snow.
Singing in the snow.
As I go
About my day
I pay no attention to the world
Around me.
I’m just singing in the snow.
And when I go home at night
I cuddle in my bed so tight.
I have this song in my mind
And feeling in my heart.”
One person clapped for her performance. It was her brother. He saw the open mic night online and decided to go. He made the right choice.
She didn’t recognize him at first, but then she heard his voice. “Bravo! Great job! I loved it!”
She walked off the stage and hugged her brother.
“What are you doing here?” She asked him.
“I came to see my sister perform her rendition of Singin’ in the Rain, Singin’ in the Snow. I loved the lyrics you added by the way.”
“Thanks.”
