Jake was in line for lunch and he saw the new kid sitting at a table nearby. He was captivated by his sense of style and good looks. The person behind him told him to move up, but he couldn’t keep him out of his peripheral vision.

He sat down to eat with his normal group of friends, but he couldn’t stop staring.

“Jake, I know you better than anybody, maybe you should go talk to him. Become his friend,” Jake’s best friend, Kyle said.

“I don’t think so, why would the new kid want to talk to me?” Jake asked in uncertainty.

“Why wouldn’t he want to talk to you? He’s new, show him around the school,” Kyle suggested.

“I don’t know, maybe later,” Jake said lazily.

“You’ll regret if you don’t,” Kyle said.

“I know, but what will he say? What will I say?” Jake asked, in his own head.

“It doesn’t matter, just go talk to him,” Kyle said as he stood up, pulled his friend up, and pushed him toward the new kid.

Hi, I’m Jacob, but you can call me Jake — -or my friends call me Jake. I don’t know, it doesn’t have to be perfect.

“Hi, I’m Jacob, but my friends call me Jake.”

“Charles, but I’ve been telling everyone to call me Charlie.”

“Charlie, do you want me to show you around the school? I know you’re new and don’t know where everything is yet — ”

“I’d love for you to show me around school,” Charlie said calmly.

“Okay, how about during study hall tomorrow? I have hall passes,” Jake said as he revealed the hall passes from his pocket.

“Sure,” Charlie said with a smile.

“See you tomorrow,” Jake said.

“Bye,” Charlie replied.

The next day, Jake showed Charlie around the school. He pointed out where fights broke out and students threw up. He showed him the gymnasium, the art classrooms, and the music room. Jake was so excited, but also nervous.

Jake heard thunder in the distance and said, “I didn’t think it would rain today.”

Lightning struck the roof of the school and Jake sniffed the air, it smelled like something was burning. The power was knocked out. Jake looked at the electrical outlets as his dad taught him, they were charred. He said, “An electrical fire, just as I thought. We need to get out of the building right now!”

“What about everyone else?” Charlie asked Jake.

“Screw everyone else, we need to think of ourselves first,” Jake replied.

They ran outside. Rain poured down and they were immediately soaked. Lightning struck the school again and caused a fire. The roof collapsed. They waited for all the students to come rushing out, but no one came. Charlie called 9–1–1 and ambulances and fire trucks rushed over.

A few firemen watered down the building, while the other firemen dashed into the burning building and pulled out as many students and teachers as they could. Students were injured and/or unconscious and they were rushed to the nearest hospital.

Jake was returned home and immediately hugged by his mother.

“Jake, I’m so glad you’re safe, too bad for your classmate, but your safe,” Jake’s mother said in excitement.

He hugged her back, happy to see his mother.

She kept a close eye on her son.

Jake and Charlie were sent to another school in town until their school was rebuilt.

“I guess we’re both the new kids this time,” Jake said.

“I guess so,” Charlie replied.

They sat together at lunch at a table outside, they sat across from each other.

It suddenly got dark, clouds shrouded the sky and a giant asteroid flew through the clouds.

“If this is it, I want to go out with a bang,” Jake said as he kissed Charlie on the mouth.

Charlie reciprocated and said, “We’ve been through worse.”

The asteroid fell to the ground and gas filled the air, killing anything that breathed it.

Charlie and Jake tried to hold their breaths for as long as they could. They held hands and fell to the ground.

The gas covered the earth and most everyone died, except for a few survivors.
